Rev. Dr. Robert Walker-Smith is a visionary leader, an anointed preacher, and a committed servant of God who has faithfully shepherded the congregation of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church since his election as Pastor in May 2019, officially beginning his pastoral assignment on June 2, 2019. A native of Rochester, New York, he is the fifth child of Deacon Robert and Deaconess Barbara Smith, and from humble beginnings, God has elevated him to impactful ministry and leadership.
Pastor Walker-Smith is a lifelong learner who has demonstrated a deep commitment to both spiritual formation and academic excellence. He is a proud graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management. He furthered his theological training at Colgate Rochester Divinity School, receiving a Master of Divinity in Black Church Studies. In recognition of his dedication to ministry and scholarship, he earned the Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) from North Central Theological Seminary. Continuing his pursuit of excellence, he is currently working toward the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Management and Leadership at Trinity Theological Seminary.
Answering the call to ministry at an early age, he was licensed in May 1990 at First Genesis Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Clarence Gavin. There, he served faithfully in multiple roles including Associate Minister, Youth Minister, Director of Youth Ministries, and Pastoral Assistant. His ordination came in December 1996 through the Great Lakes Missionary Baptist Association of the Empire State Missionary Baptist Convention, affirming the call that had long been evident on his life.
As the fourth successor to the founding pastor, Rev. William H. Brock, Sr., Pastor Walker-Smith has led Progressive Missionary Baptist Church into a season of growth, renewal, and transformation. Under his leadership, the church has experienced financial stabilization, infrastructure improvements including a new HVAC system and enhanced A/V capabilities, and a strengthened digital presence through its website and social media platforms. His leadership reflects both vision and stewardship, positioning the church for continued impact in Southeast Raleigh and beyond.
Above all, Pastor Walker-Smith is a devoted husband and father. He is married to Dr. Tiamesha Walker-Smith, and together they are blessed with three wonderful children—Kiari, Taylor, and Jonah—who remain the joy of his life and a testament to God’s grace upon his family.
